FORT WAYNE, Ind. Former Mayor Ivan Lebamoff, who's credited with helping spur redevelopment of the city's downtown during the 1970s, has died.
He was 73.

Lebamoff's son said his father had cancer and his health had worsened in the past week. He died today at the Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana.

Lebamoff served one term as the city's mayor from 1972 through 1975 and was Allen County's Democratic Party chairman for many years.

Family members say Lebamoff lost his re-election bid in 1975, then resumed his law practice until his vision and other health problems became worse during the last four months.

Lebamoff's family emigrated from Macedonia. He graduated from Fort Wayne's South Side High School in 1950 and from Indiana University in 1954.
