Qantas re-evaluates 777 for Sydney-London

Qantas is re-evaluating the Boeing 777-200LR for non-stop services from Sydney to London, New York and Dallas, but airline executives working on the evaluation decline to disclose when a decision will be made. “We are still undergoing that evaluation. We haven’t made a decision one way or another on that aircraft type,” Qantas head of fleet management David Kelly told delegates at the 12th annual Asia Pacific Airlines Engineering and Maintenance Conference in Singapore.

To get the necessary range “it would require us to significantly change what we would put on the aircraft. Our initial view is we would have to try and take anything between seven to nine tonnes off the material weight of the aircraft,” says Kelly.

The carrier is currently talking to suppliers about lighter materials that could be used for the interiors to help reduce the aircraft’s weight, Kelly says.

He adds that it is hard to get the aircraft’s overall weight low enough so it has the desired range and “a reasonable seat count”.

"Panik onboard SAS-aircraft
The engine shut down and something fell off the aircraft

In 10 000 meters had SAS-plane suddenly only one functioning motor.
The flight to Copenhagen became a nightmare for those 145 passengers onboard.
The incident happened over North of France last Sunday evening. The plane was en route from Paris about a quarter of an hour when suddenly there was a noise heard in the cabin.

I saw something to fall off
Something had happened with the left engine - so the pilot had to shut it down.
- We don't know wat happened, we have to find out about it said SAS- informationschief Bertil Ternert to aftonbladet.se.
According to the Danish newspaper Berlinske Tidende the passengers saw how something flew out of the engine and disappeared towards the ground.
The big plane of model MD80, started immeadiately loose height. Passengers could nothing else but get panicked.

'Are we going to crash?'
- I've been flying so many times. I understood immediately that something was wrong. The first thing that I thought of was: Is it ... now? Are we going to crash. says one of the passengers, architect Robert Mogensen from danish Thisted, for B.T.
The pilot made an announcement that he was compelled to land to the nearest airport. Other aircrafts nearby were told to wait with their landings and let the SAS-plane land as soon as possible."
toni_a The BBC reports that the European Court of Justice has ruled the airline data agreement with the United States is illegal. The 'agreement' required airlines to share 34 items of personal data of their passengers with American authorities at least fifteen minutes before take-off of any flight to the US. The Court of Justice examined the agreement after the European Parliament objected.

Aer Lingus plans to leave oneworld

30 May 2006

Aer Lingus has confirmed to its oneworldTM partners that it intends to leave the alliance but retain bilateral links with a number of the grouping's key member airlines.

The timing and terms for its withdrawal will be considered at the next meeting of the alliance's Governing Board, but it is likely to be in early 2007, as the three new recruits lining up to join oneworld board the alliance in its biggest expansion to date - Japan Airlines, the largest airline in the Asia-Pacific region; Malev Hungarian and Royal Jordanian.

Aer Lingus' strategy has changed fundamentally since it joined the alliance six years ago and is no longer convergent with oneworld's. The alliance's key target market is the multi-sector, premium, frequent international traveller, while Aer Lingus has repositioned itself as a low fares point-to-point carrier.

The departure of Aer Lingus - currently the smallest airline in oneworld, with 13,765 million of the total 761,794 million available seat kilometres capacity offered in 2005 by its existing members - will come as alliance's three recruits increase its capacity by more than 20 per cent. Talks are progressing between oneworld and other airlines interested in joining.

Aer Lingus is in discussions with various oneworld members with the aim of retaining strong bilateral links with them, and its intention is to conclude these agreements before its leaves oneworld.

It has confirmed that it has no intention of joining another global alliance and that its key bilateral relationships will remain with oneworld members.

Ireland will remain part of the oneworld network through services operated by the alliance's other member airlines.

Airline chief warns of open-sky setback
By Doug Cameron in New York
Published: June 14 2006 21:40 | Last updated: June 14 2006 21:40

The head of Air France-KLM on Wednesday warned that European Union governments were likely to turn down a US proposal on airline ownership and control, endangering plans for a new transatlantic aviation pact.

Jean-Cyril Spinetta, chairman and chief executive of the world's largest airline by revenues, also said he could help Continental Airlines secure slots at London's congested Heathrow airport. Continental, which has an alliance with the European carrier, has been the most vociferous opponent of the so-called open-skies deal.

SWISS expands long-haul fleet

SWISS will expand its long-haul fleet by two Airbus A330-200 aircraft as of the next winter timetable. Configured for 42 business class and 187 economy class seats, these aircraft will replace leased-in equipment on East and West Africa routes and also be used for timetable improvement on intercontinental routes.

In pushing ahead with its commitment to growth, SWISS will add two Airbus A330-200 to its long-haul fleet. The two new aircraft are to be integrated into SWISS flight operations as of the end of this year. Lufthansa supports this fleet expansion. With the restructuring programme that was introduced last year now largely completed and negotiations with most employee groups either concluded or at an advanced stage, the Management Board and the Board of Directors have given the green light for fleet expansion. Factors supporting this decision are the high seat load factor for the current long-haul route network and strong demand for as many daily services as possible.

“SWISS wants to grow step by step. By adding these two long-haul aircraft, SWISS is strengthening the quality of its route network. They are also highly compatible with our existing fleet“, commented SWISS CEO Christoph Franz. “We have taken advantage of the opportunity to expand our long-haul fleet even though our restructuring programme, which aims to bring about a permanent improvement in our cost structure, is not yet complete. Significant milestones have already been achieved, and we will continue resolutely in the same direction. The integration of these two aircraft will generate about 150 jobs for flying personnel alone. This will help us to realise our plans to boost productivity on the part of our Airbus pilots without having to shed jobs. And towards the end of the summer we can, for the first time, start recruiting new flight attendants.“

SWISS will take delivery of the first Airbus A330-200 in mid-November. It will be put into service on flights to Malabo/Douala/Yaound#233; and Nairobi/Dar es Salaam.

The second aircraft will arrive in December and add capacity on existing routes. Flights LX16/15 from Zurich to New York JFK and LX64/65 from Zurich to Miami will then operate daily. Zurich – Riyadh – Jeddah will increase from three to four weekly frequencies, Zurich – Nairobi – Dar es Salaam from four to five weekly frequencies and Zurich – Sao-Paulo – Santiago de Chile from five to six weekly frequencies.

Both Airbus A330-200 aircraft were previously in service at Lufthansa. They have a 229-seat, two-class configuration with 42 business class and 187 economy class seats, with a cabin interior practically identical with that of the existing SWISS Airbus A330s. Their addition brings the SWISS long-haul fleet to 21 aircraft, consisting of nine A340-300 and eleven A330-200 aircraft, plus the leased-in Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) in service on the Zurich-Newark route.

New Airline Says Thank You For Smoking

BERLIN - A German businessman has founded an airline dedicated to smokers.

Smintair, or "Smokers' International Airways," aims to cater for smoking passengers, particularly from Asia, who feel they have been squeezed out of the market.

Its first aircraft are due to take off in October on a route between Dusseldorf and Tokyo and are expected to serve mainly Japanese businessmen.

Smintair's founder, Alexander Schoppmann, himself a 30-a-day man, said he was trying to offer an alternative in an age when smoking is banned on all major airlines.

"It disturbs me that I pay a lot of money for a ticket only to be told what I can and cannot do," he said.

zlotty_co_380 UK deal will put Qantas on high

QANTAS will be able to operate unlimited services to London under a new deal concluded this week.

The deal, which could generate millions in additional income for carriers from both countries, also removes any barriers to Virgin Blue and Jetstar beginning Australia-Britain flights.

Both discount carriers will be able to extend their future long-haul strategy beyond the present plans to fly to the U.S. and to several holiday destinations in Asia.

Representatives of both carriers attended this week's two-day Canberra conference of Australian and British officials who signed the new air services treaty.

Jetstar chief Alan Joyce has previously said his soon-to-be-launched, long-haul operation would at some future date operate flights to Britain.

Federal Transport Minister Warren Truss also said Qantas would no longer have to contend with being restricted to operating 28 services a week from Australia to Britain.

British Airways, currently restricted to 16 weekly services, and Virgin Atlantic, which operates seven, will both get open access to Australian air space in return.

Until yesterday, Qantas was flying the maximum number of services to Britain a week permitted under the existing air services treaty.

Qantas head of government and international relations David Hawes said the decision offered the airline and other carriers an opportunity to expand and meet future passenger growth.

Australian airlines now will only be limited on the number of flights they can operate by the availability of slots at Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester airports.

Because of the Australia-Singapore free trade agreement, Australian carriers will be able to fly to London via the city state free of any route restriction.

The new treaty does not extend to flights between Australia and Britain where Japan, China or the U.S. might be used as a refuelling or passenger hub.

Qantas services will still be restricted in Europe where landing rights are limited to three capital cities under present arrangements.
