Genetic distances, phylogenetic trees and correspondence analyses show that the Bulgarian population is more closely related to the Italian, the Mediterranean, the Armenian and the Romanian population than to the other East and West European population. This is further supported by the analysis of HLA class I haplotypes in Bulgarians. Most of them are also common in Europe. However their frequency pattern in Bulgarians is similar to the South European populations. The presence of some rare alleles and haplotypes indicated Asian genetic inflow. On the basis of HLA class I profile and supported by historical and anthropological data, we suggest that the Bulgarian population is characterized by the features of the Southern European anthropological type with some influence of other groups such as Asians, Turks, Armenians. Migrations and assimilation of many different ethnic groups are the major factor determining the genetic diversity of our population.

HLA-DRB and -DQB1 polymorphism in the Macedonian population.

HLA-DRB1, DRB3/4/5 and DQB1 polymorphism has been studied in a population of 80 unrelated healthy Macedonians using molecular methods. Twenty-five different DRB1 alleles were identified of which DRB1*1104, *1501, *1601, and *1101 were found most frequently. Among the 15 identified DQB1 alleles, two were predominant: DQB1*0301 and *0502. The most frequent three-locus haplotypes were DRB1*1104-DRB3*02-DQB1*0301 (18%/), DRB1*1101-DRB3*02-DQB1*0301 (9%) and DRB1*1601-DRB5*02-DQB1*0502 (10%). Polymorphism for DRB1*04, *13 and *15 haplotypes was extensive. Eleven different DR2-related haplotypes were found, some of which were unusual for European populations: DRB1*1501-DRB5*0102-DQB1*0502, DRB1*1501-DRB5*02-DQB1*0502, DRB1*1501-DRB5*0102-DQB1*0601. ???!!!

Most of these haplotypes are common in East Asia!!!

Gene frequencies of human platelet antigens in the Macedonian population

Abstract

Human platelet antigen (HPA) systems consist of more than 12 bi-allelic antigen polymorphisms. Due to these polymorphisms, platelet-membrane glycoproteins can be recognized as alloantigens or autoantigens and can cause conditions such as fetomaternal alloimmune thrombocytopenia, post-transfusion refractoriness to platelets, and post-transfusion throbocytopenic purpura. The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of HPA-1, -2, -3, and -5 in Macedonian population by using the polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism. The allele frequencies were 0.865 for HPA-1a, 0.135 for HPA-1b, 0.852 for HPA-2a, 0.148 for HPA-2b, 0.578 for HPA-3a, 0.422 for HPA-3b, 0.909 for HPA-5a, and 0.091 for HPA-5b. Results of our study were not significantly different from those reported in the other European studies.Our population displayed the highest frequency for HPA-2b allele (0.148) reported among European population.
