Online to My Yahoo! By Josh Grossberg The Great race is over. Baz Luhrmann, who had been running neck and neck with Oliver Stone to bring the story of Alexander the Great to the big screen, has decided to go the slow and steady route. The Aussie auteur behind Moulin Rouge announced he has postponed production on his ambitious historical epic Alexander the Great until the beginning of next year. According to reports in Daily Variety and the Los Angeles Times, Luhrmann's delay means his version, starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role and Nicole Kidman (news) as Alexander's mother Olympia, won't hit theaters before 2005 at the earliest. It also ensures that Stone's competing project, simply titled Alexander and starring Colin Farrell (news), will be the first one into production and into theaters. Warner Bros. has targeted Alexander for Thanksgiving 2004 release. According to Luhrmann, he refuses to be hurried in telling the mammoth story of the Macedonian king who conquered the ancient world before dying prematurely at the age of 33. "I am not going to be drawn into a race," Luhrmann told the Los Angeles Times from his home in Australia. The director now hopes to commence work on the film, a coproduction between Universal and DreamWorks, by April 2004. Twentieth Century Fox, which financed Moulin Rouge, was one of the original backers of the project but later bailed because of budgetary concerns--the cost is estimated at $150 million. DreamWorks stepped in and will now handle overseas distribution of the film, which once had Martin Scorsese (news) attached as director. Luhrmann scuttled his previous schedule for a variety of reasons, the most important being that his Leo-ness had already committed to playing Howard Hughes (news) in Scorsese's biopic on the oddball billionaire titled The Aviator. As a result, the former "King of the World" wasn't available to play King of the ancient world until fall at the earliest. Another snag in getting Alexander the Great off the ground was the war in Iraq (news - web sites). According to Luhrmann's producer, Dino De Laurentiis, the helmer originally planned to film in Jordan, where he had already scouted locations. But try getting insurance for two of Tinseltown's top stars to make a movie next to a war zone. Luhrmann briefly flirted with shooting the film Down Under, but decided he wanted a more authentic location and waited out the war. But instead of Jordan, he and De Laurentiis will head for Morocco, where they secured the support of King Mohammed VI, who put over 4,000 soldiers and 8,000 horses at Luhrmann's disposal. In return, De Laurentiis agreed to build three soundstages in Morocco that the country could use for future productions. They'll certainly need them. Alexander the Great reportedly has 17 principal characters, more than 70 speaking roles, not to mention thousands of extras. "This huge preparation can't be done in less than eight or nine months," De Laurentiis told Daily Variety. Also adding to the holdup was Luhrmann's Freudian desire to revise screenwriter Ted Tally's script to examine Alexander's childhood and his complex relationship with his mother before growing up to be the warrior king who founded the Persian empire, the largest empire mankind has ever seen. The delay will also give the filmmaker time for diaper duty. He and his Oscar-winning production-designer wife, Catherine Martin, recently announced their expecting a baby, their first, in October. While he's still got a year until principal photography gets underway, Luhrmann, ever the perfectionist, plans to begin working on the flick's digital effects in November and rehearsing DiCaprio and Kidman in January. Despite the setback, DiCaprio lent his support to the project, indicating he's more than ready for the challenge of portraying a man of such epic proportions. "What most attracts me is the complex character of Alexander himself," DiCaprio said Tuesday. "His legend is one of the most compelling stories in human history." Luhrmann's no stranger to taking his time. It took him five years to make Moulin Rouge following 1996's William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, which also headlined DiCaprio. As for Stone, the Oscar-winning Platoon director is used to running his productions like a military campaign, so it comes as no surprise to hear that he's already begun filming some background shots for his film in the Himalayas. But unlike Luhrmann, Stone aims to shoot his epic in a breezy four months starting in July in, yes, Morocco. The cast and crew will then take a break for a month to escape the searing desert heat and return to locations there in September. Thus continues Hollywood's trend of rival productions featuring the same subject made simultaneously by two very different directors. Other films in competition include 1997's heated contest between Dante's Peak and Volcano, 1998's face-off between Armageddon and Deep Impact, as well as Antz and A Bug's Life, and 2000's race between Mission to Mars and Red Planet.

f9 As far as "Hellenism"--- I'm not sure what you mean. Does that mean "Greekness?" I think-- from what I saw--- Oliver Stone's take on what happened & how things happened will follow what Ptolemy & Aristotle say ... I think.. throughout the film there may be certain shifting viewpoints depending on who is talking or what they believe. Whenm Alexander is talking to Roxanne-- you beleieve HE thinks she killed Hephastion... when Roxanne is talking ... you beleive SHE thinks Alexander is paranoid... When Alexander talks with the dying Hephastion-- he glows with hope at founding a new and better world with many children from their wives... and yet when Ptolemy talks-- he scoffs at what a ridiculous idea it would be to hope that the world may change & evolve by purposely mixing the races. I think Oliver does an outstanding job of leaving all sorts of decisions up to the viewer. However... When they are leaving Persia (or is that India-- the place where Alexander is wearing the white transparent jammies.).. Alexander doesn't say We are going home to GREECE.... he says "We are going HOME--- We are going HOME--- (and here there's a pause-- a really felt one as the troops kind of wonder what he thinks of as "Home" .... at this point it could mean anything-- it could mean get back into your tents or something... it could mean "home is the battlefield" the troops wait and watch..and then he says....) TO MACEDON." And there's a HUGE GRAND CHEER, and everyone in great releif is smiling and crying and cheering. It's clear he and his troops identify with his homeland in Macedon--- he's not thinking of Athens or Thebes or anywhere else as the capitol of "Greece"-- he rules Greece and all of everywhere else from Macedon. He doesn't really say he's "Greek" as far as I remember- BUT, that kind of goes without saying... HE IS talked about as being the descendant of ACHILLES-- and being the son of ZUES. His mopther keeps a snake in her bed -that manifestation of Zues-- even in the last scene. So-- if they're Greek -- he's Greek. Od predpremiernoto gledanje na Aleksandar,

n/a It would appear that Angelina Jolie is a little confused about the time lines in her new movie Alexander. Jolie is playing Alexander The Great’s mother, Olympias, in the forthcoming Oliver Stone epic. But Jolie thinks the Greek conqueror, played by Colin Farrell, died aged 19; he was actually 33. But the 28-year-old actress, responding to criticism that she is too young to play the mother of 27-year-old Farrell, said: "I play Alexander's mother when he's seven and I age through the movie, though he was quite young when he died, about 19. So it's not like his mother was that old by the end. She's mid-30s.veli greek conqueror toa nemi zvuchi na promakedonski ti shto velish na toa...?????

On display in them are the first looks at Elliott Cowan as the loyal General Ptolemy, Jared Leto as Alexander's childhood friend & lover Hephaistion, and a blond almost 80's daytime soap hair looking Colin Farrell as the young virile king. Thunder from down under Plot Summary for Alexander the Great (2004) This biographical epic follows the life of Alexander the Great who conquered the whole then known world and spreaded greek civilization to the most far off places. Alexander became king of Macedonia (and Greece at general) at a very young age, after the assassination of his father Philip who had previously united for the first time all of Greece under his belt. Alexander was educated by the great philosopher Aristotle who was brought from Athens for this particular reason. The new king was also very ambitious; he couldn't stop thinking about the Persian invasion on Greece almost 150 years before and his desire to get revenge was constantly growing. To that end, he started gathering an army to invade Asia; his first goal was to liberate the greek cities of Minor Asia's coast and his second to bring down the vast Persian Empire, against all odds Summary written by Chris Makrozahopoulos {[email protected]} Slusnav deka Nikole Kidman ke bila majkamu na Alexandar vo filmot

Thunder from down under najnovo za filmot Fresh Plalanx for 'Alexander the Great' Fri Dec 13,12:44 AM ET By Jonathan Bing NEW YORK (Variety) - A new battalion of financiers has rallied behind Baz Luhrmann 's "Alexander the Great." Twentieth Century Fox, which was planning to co-finance the epic with Universal Pictures, has withdrawn from the project. DreamWorks has rushed into the breach, replacing Fox as Universal's partner and shouldering an equal share of the budget in return for international distribution rights to the massive production. Universal will distribute the picture domestically. Dino De Laurentiis is producing and Leonardo DiCaprio will topline the feature, a panoramic biopic of the Macedonian conqueror, adapted by "Red Dragon" screenwriter Ted Tally from a trilogy of novels by Valerio Manfredi. The studios said the production, which was originally scheduled to begin next month, will still have a 2003 start date. But cameras aren't likely to roll until late 2003 at the earliest. DiCaprio's next film is expected to be "The Aviator," a biopic of Howard Hughes directed by Martin Scorsese . He returns to theaters later this month in both "Catch Me If You Can" and "Gangs of New York." Universal and DreamWorks are eager to send Luhrmann's picture into production before a rival Alexander the Great project lays claim to the territory. Oliver Stone and Mel Gibson have been developing their own Alexander epics, but thus far, Luhrmann appears to have beaten back the competition. "Like so many," Luhrmann said in a statement, "I have been drawn to the story of a 20-year-old Macedonian boy who, seeking the love and approval of his dead father, ends up conquering more of the world's surface than any man to have come before or after." At a time when ambitious period epics are gaining popularity around town -- from "Troy" at Warner Bros. to "Gladiator 2" at DreamWorks and Universal -- "Alexander" is one of the grandest. While Fox didn't officially divulge its reasons for backing out of the "Alexander" deal, the studio likely felt the sharp financial pinch of a project whose preliminary budget hovers well north of $100 million. Talent deals haven't closed, but aggregate gross points for players like De Laurentiis and DiCaprio could be steep. Fox is committed to a number of $100 million pictures, including "Master and Commander" and "Tripoli." The DreamWorks and Universal partnership is also a natural. The studios have partnered on scores of major releases, including another sword-and-sandal spectacular, "Gladiator," which won the best picture Oscar two years ago. Universal is running point on production on "Alexander," but DreamWorks partner Steven Spielberg could play an instrumental role in the shoot. Spielberg, known for his nuts-and-bolts approach to film budgets, has taken a keen interest in the epic, and may help keep costs in check. The picture also has a powerful advocate in Morocco's King Mohammed VI, who has pledged to support the production with an army of extras.
Thunder from down under Oliver Stone on a Roll with Alexander Epic 23/12/2002 By Michael Fleming NEW YORK (Variety) - Oliver Stone 's costly "Alexander the Great" won a key battle late Thursday in its race to beat a rival project from Baz Luhrmann to the big screen. Warner Bros. is closing a deal to become the domestic distributor of Stone's epic, a move that allows producer Intermedia to greenlight the picture for a June start. Irishman Colin Farrell ("Minority Report") will star as the Macedonian conqueror. That gives the film a good chance to start well before the Luhrmann project, which is being financed by DreamWorks and Universal and would star Leonardo DiCaprio . Both films are the passion projects for a lot of high-powered filmmakers and executives, but they are also among the most expensive films ever attempted. The location for Stone's film wasn't being revealed, nor was the size of Warner's contribution to a budget sources said is north of $100 million but under $150 million. Stone's film has been the underdog since the producer Dino De Laurentiis said in August that Luhrmann and DiCaprio would reunite in Morocco next January to shoot Ted Tally's script, complete with cooperation and troops from Morocco's King Mohammed VI. But a financing shakeup that saw Fox replaced by DreamWorks, Luhrmann's attention to the Broadway bow of "La Boheme" and DiCaprio's reunion in May with "Gangs of New York" director Martin Scorsese for the Howard Hughes biopic "The Aviator" now put that film's start date more realistically at fall, at the earliest. Meanwhile Stone and Intermedia were comparatively quiet. The director spent the last year working exclusively on scouting and rewriting a script. The result, said insiders, is as strong as anything the Oscar winner ("Midnight Express," "Born on the Fourth of July," "Platoon") has written. Farrell won the role of the charismatic conqueror six months ago after doing a persuasive and extensive screen test with Stone. orginalniot film od 1956 .. Eskobar Informacija za Aleksandar Makedonski Alexander is supposed to have been fair skinned, with a ruddy tinge to his face and chest. Plutarch stated that he had a pleasing scent. Like all Macedonians, Alexander liked his liquor; his fondness for wine also caused some of his outbursts of rage. Alexander liked drama, the flute and the lyre, poetry and hunting. What he truly wanted in his life was glory and valor, rather than easy living and riches. He was not fond of athletic contests, according to Plutarch. http://wso.williams.edu/~junterek/youth.htm

n/a Not sure if you people are aware, but the 'Alexander' movie which is to be released on the 5th November will portray Alexander The Great as a Greek, as it should, as 95% of the world's scholars agree (including the historical advisor on the film - Robin Lane Fox) that Ancient Macedonians were indeed a Greek race... The other 5% of scholars that don't believe that Ancient Macedonians weren't part of the Ancient Greek world, believe that they were another race - but definately not the one living in 10% of Macedonia called FYROM! So I was just wondering if you are all aware of those facts???

OooOo Grcite na sekoj mozhen nachin pokushavaat da go predstavat Aleksandar Makedonski kako Grk. So ovaa sudska postapka direktno (ili indirektno) kazhuvaat deka Aleksandar e Grk. "Alexander the Great " Question May Go to Court A group of Greek lawyers has threatened to file a lawsuit against Warner Bros. and Oliver Stone "for suggesting Alexander the Great was bisexual" in their latest blockbuster. Athens-based attorneys are demanding that Warner Bros. issue a disclaimer saying "Alexander" is a fiction. They claim that the unreleased version of the film made references to Alexander the Great's alleged homosexuality, "a fact that is in no historical document or archive on Alexander". In "Alexander," director Oliver Stone and actor Colin Farrell take on the legendary warrior who conquered most of the known world by age 25. By the time he died, just shy of his 33rd birthday, Alexander's empire spanned what now is Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of India, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; two million square miles. All that happened in his short life, which spanned his birth in Pella, Macedonia (now Greece), in 356 BC and ended abruptly in 323 BC during a drinking bout in Babylon, now Iraq.

Fiachra Gibbons reports on how Oliver Stone's epic Alexander is reigniting an ancient, bitter feud. Friday November 19, 2004 The Guardian The first western imperialist ... Colin Farrell as Alexander "We will come and kill you in your beds, cut your throats, and wipe you from the face of the earth ... if Alexander the Great were alive today he would grind you gypsy dogs into the dust, dig your dead from their graves and silence forever your filthy language that insults his name ..." Internet chatrooms have never been the most decorous of forums but even in the free-for-all that is cyberspace, those dedicated to discussing Oliver Stone's new film, Alexander, are a case apart. Since the combative director of JFK chose to make his first foray into historical epics with a biopic of the most fought-over figure of the ancient world, rivers of blood have been spilt - figuratively at least - in a propaganda battle between Greek and Macedonian nationalists over who has the right to claim the all-conquering hero as their own. This very modern ethnic turf war is being fought with tortuously argued historical blogs about which Macedonia Alexander conquered the known world for - a tiny new Balkan republic that has only recently come to see itself as the keeper of his flame, or a province that was officially known as "Northern Greece" until the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia declared itself independent and bagged the name. But the real blood and guts of the battle, the part Alexander would have so enjoyed, is in the chatrooms, where fanatical foot- soldiers taunt each other with blood-curdling threats heavy with echoes of the short but brutish Balkan wars that carved up ancient land between Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria almost a century ago. Even for such a seasoned controversialist, this is a scrap to stand back from. For the struggle over who have the right to call themselves descendents of the greatest military commander in history, and the first real western imperialist, is neither pretty nor edifying. In the early 1990s, Greece nearly invaded the newborn Republic of Macedonia for "stealing" Alexander's symbol, the Star of Vergina, for its flag, as well as the White Tower in the Greek Macedonian capital of Thessaloniki for its banknotes, something the millions of ordinary Greeks who took to the streets saw as "blatant acts of aggression". The flag and the banknotes were hastily withdrawn, but Greek pride was far from restored. To the horror of its European partners, Athens briefly contemplated carving up its defenceless northern neighbour with the Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic. In the end, Greece stepped back, choosing instead to blockade the tiny republic of barely two million people in an attempt to strangle it at birth. Since then millions have been spent on a war of attrition to claim the name - and Alexander - back. You cannot walk more than a few hundred metres in any town in northern Greece without tripping over a new statue, bust or monument to Alexander, who extended the Hellenic world as far as India in the fourth century BC with such slaughter that even today in Iran and central Asia his name is used to scare unruly children. You will find the most pointed statue of all at the border with Macedonia at Niki - named after the Greek god of victory - where a giant Alexander angrily brandishes a javelin at the upstart state across the frontier. All over Greek Macedonia, streets, schools and airports have been hastily renamed, while archaeologists, having all but ignored ancient Macedonia until relatively recently, are digging furiously for its traces. The spectacular tomb of Alexander's father, Phillip, at Vergina near Thessaloniki, and the city's revamped museum, hammer home the kingdom's Greekness. Still, passions had cooled somewhat after an unhappy compromise over the name that burdened Skopje with the cumbersome temporary moniker of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, or "Fyrom" for short. Greek investment also began to build bridges - until Stone and his army of Hollywood stars appeared on the horizon to put nationalists on both sides back on a hair-trigger. It is into this fraught and febrile atmosphere that George W Bush has now wandered. With the world waiting and wondering where the president will start the next war, Bush chose as his first major foreign-policy decision of his second term to recognise Fyrom by its "proper" name as the Republic of Macedonia, prompting paroxysms of Greeks anger across the globe and Athens to vow to block Macedonia's entry into the EU and Nato. Even before Bush's intervention, the very mention of the M-word in Greek Macedonia risked a stern lecture on how it has been Greek since antiquity. I nearly lost an ear to a particularly patriotic barber in Thessaloniki last month when I mentioned that I had just arrived from the "other Macedonia". Those people are not Macedonian, he raged. "That is a Slav lie. We are the real Macedonians. They are prostitutes and Gypsies and worse than Albanians," he declared. His family, it turned out, were recent Greek immigrants from Georgia who, he claimed, went "east with Alexander". He liked to take his son on Sundays to the massive equestrian statue of Alexander on the city's seafront promenade, where Greek right-wingers gathered after Bush's bombshell to burn American and Macedonian flags. "I tell him to be proud of his ancestors and how lucky he is to have returned to the land of his forefathers." But ask anyone four hours north in Skopje what Alexander was and they will smile sheepishly and say, "Macedonian, of course!" And when pressed about the obvious absurdity of a country that has a majority Slavic population claiming a man who was born nearly 1,000 years before the first Slav appeared in Macedonia, they answer, "Well, he was certainly not Greek." If the Macedonians were Greek, why did Alexander have to address his troops in both Greek and ancient Macedonian, they argue. And every dog can quote the Athenian orator Demosthenes' famous condemnation of Alexander's father Philip as "not only no Greek, nor related to the Greeks, but not even a barbarian from any place that can be named with honour, but a pestilent knave from Macedonia, whence it was never yet possible to buy a decent slave." "No one is saying that Alexander spoke modern Macedonian, that is ridiculous, but who is to say that there isn't something of him still floating around in the genome," says Vojislav Sarakinski, a lecturer in ancient history at the city's main Cyril and Methodius university. It is easy to ridicule all this as archetypical Balkan lunacy until you realise how much of the emotional heat of the dispute stems from the insecurity of both countries about their borders, fears fully justified by the region's recent history. Stone has been well aware of these sensitivities from the start, though initial Greek outrage at his film focused on Alexander's omnivorous sexuality, in particular his fondness for eunuchs. His film, he insists, is purely about the historical "man god", and so has made no secret of showing Alexander's love for his friend Hephaestion. There is, however, none of the lurid decadence promised from Baz Luhrmann's planned film about Alexander, if it ever gets off the blocks. Evangelos Venizelos, the formidable former Greek culture minister and a Macedonian, attempted to get Stone onside early on, offering him Greek locations and the use of the army for battle scenes, but the director demurred and instead diplomatically chose locations far away from controversy in Morocco and Thailand. Confronted with angry MPs unhappy with what they were hearing about Alexander's bisexuality, Venizelos despaired, "What can I do? It's Hollywood." Generally, though, most Greeks see the Stone film as a chance to strike a blow against Skopje, given that it is based on the biography by the Oxford academic Robin Lane Fox, whom both sides see as a Hellenist. None of the previous, deeply disappointing attempts to bring Alexander's extraordinary life to the screen have had to walk the same tightrope because, until Skopje broke away from Belgrade in 1991, Alexander's origins were not in dispute. In fact he barely figured in the old Yugoslav textbooks, and even in Greece he was something of a forgotten figure - relegated to the second and third division of Hellenic heroes behind Pericles, the great philosophers, and warriors such as Leonidas. While the great Greek director Theo Angelopoulos dealt obliquely with him in his film about a 19th-century Macedonian brigand, Megalexandros, there has been no biopic in either country. "Alexander lived long before nationalism and so is our common hero," says Vasil Tupurkovski, a former deputy president, who has written four popular histories about him. "He would be laughing at us arguing about him now." Ah, but would he be laughing in Greek or Macedonian? Professor Nade Proeva, the expert on ancient Macedonia in Skopje, thinks both. "Alexander certainly spoke and wrote Greek, but then it was the lingua franca of the time, like English is now. I speak French but that does not make me French." With such treacherous ground to negotiate, and amid thunderous lobbying from both sides, Stone has chosen a remarkably adroit middle course. His masterstroke has been to give Alexander and the men of the Macedonian phalanxes Irish accents, while the Greeks speak clipped English RP. Macedonians of all complexions are content with this, each convinced it favours their cause. So in another two millennia when people ponder again the origins of the mysterious Macedonian who emerged from the southern Balkans to rule the world at 25, they will turn their ears to Colin Farrell's guttural brogue and conclude that he was in fact a Dubliner. · Alexander opens in the US next week and in the UK in January.
