Understanding Gas Prices
Crude Oil Crude oil is a world commodity and the base product used to refine gasoline and diesel fuels. This raw material cost typically accounts for 35-40 per cent of the final retail pump price of gasoline. Crude oil prices averaged $26 US per barrel in 2002, which is relatively unchanged from 2001. Profit The two per cent profit, or 1.2 cents per litre, represents the overall 2002 Petro-Canada downstream profit as expressed in audited financial statements. Profit margins on gasoline have been greatly reduced over the years as numerous retailers compete for customers. Taxes Taxes are the single biggest component of the retail pump price. In 2002, Canadians paid, on average, 30.2 cents on every litre of gasoline purchased. Differences in taxes between provinces often explains much of the regional difference in pump prices. For more information, a detailed comparison of gasoline tax rates across the country is available. Refining and Marketing Costs This portion of the price covers all costs of operations – such as the costs of refining crude oil into gasoline, transportation, distribution charges, as well as all marketing and operational expenses at the retail level. povekje info TUKA
