Central, eastern European children most violent: study

LONDON (AFP) - Children from eastern and central Europe are the most violent in the developed world, while those from Finland and Macedonia were the least violent, a study showed.

The study commissioned by the American Academy of Pediatrics quizzed 161,082 boys and girls in 35 developed countries in the 2001/2002 school year about how often they had been in a physical fight in the previous 12 months.
Unsurprisingly, boys fought far more than girls, according to the survey carried out by the HSBC bank. Boys were also more likely to fight with total strangers than girls, who fought more with friends and relatives.
American boys were joint 29th with their Canadian counterparts at 46.8 percent; US girls came 11th out of 35 at 25 percent.
In the Czech Republic, 69.1 percent of the boys surveyed reported to have got into a fight in the previous year, topping the list for male pupils involved in violence.
Next were Lithuanians at 66.6 percent, Russians at 65.6 percent, Hungarians at 64.6 percent, Estonians at 64.1 percent, Ukrainians at 63 percent, Flemish-Belgians at 62.8 percent, Latvians at 62.4 percent, Israelis at 60.5 percent.
Scottish boys ranked number 10 on the list, at 60.2 percent.
After them were Poles, Greeks, English, Belgium French, Maltese, Slovenes, Austrians, Croatians, Italians, Irish, Spanish, Norwegians, French, Danes, Portuguese, Welsh, Dutch, Swedes, Americans, Canadians, Swiss, Greenlanders, Germans, Macedonians.
At the bottom of the list were boys from Finland at 36.7 percent.
Topping the list of countries with the most violent girls was Hungary, at 32.1 percent.
In descending order were Estonians at 31.6 percent, Lithuanians at 31.4 percent, Belgium-French at 31.2 percent, English at 29.2 percent, Scottish at 29.1 percent, Greeks at 28.9 percent, Spaniards at 27.3 percent, Czechs at 26.7 percent.
Belgium-Flemish girls ranked 10 at 26.3 percent.
The next most violent were American girls at 25.0 percent, followed by Welsh, Canadians, Slovenes, Maltese, Irish, Danes, Greenlanders, Dutch, Russians, French, Italians, Austrians, Portuguese, Swedes, Israelis, Norwegians, Latvians, Croatians, Ukrainians, Poles, Germans, Swiss, Macedonians.
The least violent were the Finnish girls at 13.3 percent.
