If one is to believe that a country's long-term prosperity and growth is tied to the strength of its innovation and science, the US is in increasing trouble. I fear that we will not begin to take things seriously until we are fairly down the declining path. Marc Faber presented two interesting tables from Robert Herbold (former COO, Microsoft).

All four Asian countries have a 4-8x the relative number of students going into engineering and China & Japan have 4x and 2x the annual number of BS degrees in absolute terms compared to the US. Another set of figures is around Ph.D's.

We need to sound the alarm, in my opinion, and start to get our kids excited and interested in science even before middle school while also more prominently promoting scientific role models. We also need to get them engaged in science through the likes of Junior Achievement, BizWorld, the Lego First Robotics Leagues and local museums (like the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry). Funny thinking from an Econ/History major making a living in finance...
Zosto nekoj od SAD da odi na inzinjerski fakultet, koj e tezok, za da raboti vo cubicle i cija rabota ke bide outsourced nekade vo Kina? Koga moze da pomini polesen fakultet i da bide advokat ili menadzer ili nesto so finance, za pogolemi pari?
BTW, Marc Faber e car, go cenam povekje nego edna lopata nobelovci po ekonomija...

Treta najgolema investicija vo Australia e "international students" , godisno preku 300000 studenti doajgaat i ucat vo Australia, golem del od niv vo Australia odlucivaat da ostanat. Po pat na student viza se dobiva permanent viza. Ima 12 subclasi koj sto moze da se podnese , a za tie dvanaeset podklasi za permanent viza ti treba da imas edna od 6-te podklasi na student viza.

Se zborese deka Amerika ke vovede ist sistem kako Australia, part time work rights i po pat na degree da si dobijat green card. Po pat na degree se zborese deka sekoj sto ke zavrsi phd ili doctorira "avtomatski" ke dobie green card. Za mene zvucese mnogu neobicno za da bide vistiinito. Bidejki ima iljadnici kinezi , indijci i ostanati koj sto ke zavrsat se samo za da dobijat green card. Po toa sto se zborese najverojatno Australia malce se "zaplasi" zosto mzoe biznisot so intl students da im propajga, zosto na toj nacin povejketo ke bidat koncentrirani kon USA. Ist system kopija na Australskiot vovede New Zealand. Pa ovaa godina imase golem % na priliv na $$$ vo NZ, ako se sporeduvase na minatite godini NZ od int stud ne dobivase mnogu $$$, no ovaa godina edna godina po voveduvanjeto na ist system kako Asutralia rezultatite bea duri pogolemi od ocekuvanoto. Pa najmnogu i mene mi bese nejasno so zborot "avtomatski" , najverojatno se samo spekulacii ili proposal na US vlada koja sto treba da go usvoi. No sekako nema da bide tolku ednostavno samo so zavrsuvanje na skolo. mozebi ova ne trebase i tuka da se pisuva , no dobro e da se znae.
