Saddam Hussein Captured Alive in Tikrit

BAGHDAD, Iraq - American forces captured a bearded Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), hiding in a hole in a farmhouse cellar near his hometown of Tikrit, the U.S. military announced Sunday. The arrest was carried out without a shot fired and was a victory for the U.S.-led coalition eight months after the fall of Baghdad.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we got him," U.S. administrator L. Paul Bremer told a news conference. "The tyrant is a prisoner," Bremer said.
Bremer said that Saddam was captured Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in a cellar in the town of Adwar, 10 miles from Tikrit, ending one of the most intense manhunts in history.
In the capital, radio stations played celebratory music, residents fired small arms in the air in celebration and others drove through the streets, shouting, "They got Saddam! They got Saddam!"
At the news conference announcing his capture, U.S. forces aired a video showing a bearded Saddam being examined by a doctor holding his mouth open with a tongue depressor, apparently to get a DNA sample.
Then a video was shown of Saddam after he was shaved.
Iraqi journalists in the audience stood, pointed and shouted "Death to Saddam!" and "Down with Saddam!"
Saddam was being held at an undisclosed location and that U.S. authorities had not yet determined whether to hand him over to the Iraqis for trial, Sanchez said

Stalin ranks with the most evil men in history alongside of Hitler. Saddam is an opportunist as they were... if given the means, he would have been at least as bad. Over time, he had aquired weapons etc. from US, Soviet Union then Russia, France, Korea, China and surely others. Iraq has always been a complex nation and maybe would be better off divided by ethnic groups.

My mother worked on the Manhattan Project during WWII. She was cleared for a top level of security... she explained that it was known back then that Stalin's Russia would be the world's next problem. Stalin did what he did to Europe and every where else his iron fist could reach. No point in wasting time going into detail, I'm sure you are well aware of his actions. There was the Cold War... it was based on MAD (mutually assured distruction, via nuclear weapons). Military action was not an option. The US economy was just too powerful and Russia couldn't keep up. Now there are a lot of free people thanks to the break up of the Soviet Union.
I wish there was no need to ever use the military to resolve problems.

Torture is torture and there is no excuse for it. If we follow the same logic, why didn't we go after Stalin? He killed more people than Saddam ever did, and he had WMD.
Comparing Hitler and Saddam doesn't fly because Hitler was not an American creation. Saddam is.

БАГДАД, 15 декември, (АП) - Американските сили го фатија брадосаниот Садам Хусеин додека се криел во дупка во подрумот на една фарма во близина на својот роден град Тикрит, соопшти вчера американската војска. Апсењето поминало без еден испукан куршум и претставува победа за сојузничката војска на чело со САД осум месеци по падот на Багдад.
"Дами и господа, го фативме", изјави на конференција за медиумите американскиот администратор Л. Пол Бремер. "Тиранинот е затвореник." Бремер вели дека Садам бил фатен во сабота во 20:30 часот (18:30 по средноевропско време) во подрум во градот Адвар, 16 км од Тикрит, што стави крај на еден од најинтензивните ловови на луѓе во историјата.
Во главниот град, радио-станиците славеа со музика, луѓето пукаа од пиштоли и пушки во воздух, а други се возеа по улиците извикувајќи, "Го фатија Садам! Го фатија Садам!"
На прес конференцијата за неговото заробување, американската војска емитуваше видео-снимка на која лекарот го испитува брадестиот Садам, кој ја држи устата отворена за лекарот со стапче да му земе примерок од ДНА. Потоа беше покажана видео-снимка од Садам избричен.
Ирачките новинари во публиката станаа и извикуваа: "Смрт за Садам!" и "Долу Садам!"
Садам е чуван на тајна локација и американските власти сеуште немаат решено дали да им го испорачаат на Ирачаните за да му судат, вели генералот-полковник Рикардо Санчез. Садам го фатиле војници од 4-тата пешадиска дивизија и од специјалните сили, вели американската војска. Во операцијата "Црвена зора" не е испукан ниеден куршум, вели Санчез.
Британскиот премиер Тони Блер го поздрави заробувањето на Садам. "Ова се многу добри вести за народот на Ирак. Тргната е сенката која веќе предолго виси над нив, можноста да се врати режимот на Садам", вели Блер во изјава објавена од неговата канцеларија.

"На Садам ќе му се суди јавно, за ирачкиот народ да ги знае неговите злосторства", вели Ахмад Чалаби, член на Владејачкиот Совет на Ирак. Тој зборуваше за Ал-Иракија, ТВ станица финансирана од Пентагон. Чалаби е водечкиот член на советот поставен од САД, кој има блиски врски со владата на Џорџ Буш.
Минатата среда привремената ирачка влада воспостави посебен суд за главните членови на владата на поранешниот диктатор за геноцид, воени злосторства и злосторства против човештвото. Тогаш тие рекоа дека на Садам ќе му се суди во отсуство. Судот ќе ги покрива сите злосторства извршени од 17 јули 1967 - денот кога партијата на Садам дојде на власт - до 1 мај 2003, кога претседателот Џорџ Буш го прогласи крајот на војната. БАГДАД (Ројтерс) - Заробувањето на поранешниот ирачки претседател нема да им стави крај на нападите врз американските сили во Ирак, изјави вчера главниот американски генерал во Ирак.
"Во моментов не очекуваме дека сосема ќе ги елиминираме нападите", изјави генералот-полковник Рикардо Санчез во Багдад. На прашањето дали очекува напади како одмазда за апсењето на Садам, Санчез одговара, "Не знам, но ние сме подготвени." Американските власти ги обвинуваат следбениците на Садам за герилските напади во кои беа убиени 197 американски војници откако претседателот Буш објави крај на војната на 1 мај.

ПАРИЗ, БЕРЛИН, 15 декември (АП)/(Ројтерс) - Францускиот претседател Жак Ширак верува дека заробувањето на Садам Хусеин ќе помогне во стабилизацијата на Ирак, кој така ќе стане суверена држава, изјави вчера портпаролката на Ширак.
Ширак беше еден од најголемите противници на американската инвазија на Ирак која го симна Садам од власт.
Германскиот канцелар Герхард Шредер му испрати на американскиот претседател Џорџ Буш телеграма со честитки по повод на апсењето на Садам. "Со голема радост дознав за фаќањето на Садам Хусеин", пишува Шредер. "Ви честитам на успешната операција. Садам Хусеин им нанесе ужасни страдања на својот народ и регионот. Се надевам дека неговото апсење ќе и помогне на меѓународната заедница во напорите да го стабилизира и повторно изгради Ирак."

You are comparing Saddam with Hitler which is plain wrong due to the different geopolitical trends present in their respective times. Furthermore, if we take the argument that Saddam tortured people and that makes him a bad person and US needs to intervene, what about East Timor? People are tortured and killed there as well. They just don't have any oil. |
