According to this White House document, the U.S. military budget for the fiscal year 2003 was $379 billion, an increase of roughly $48 billion from the year before. This budget represents roughly 18% of the federal budget, and 53% of the total discretionary money controlled by the Congress and the Administration.
The increase alone was larger than the annual military budget of any other country. From the $379 billion figure, the worldwide list drops precipitously to $34.8 billion for the United Kingdom, $29 billion for Russia, $27 billion for France, and $23.1 billion for Germany.
Next year, the budget is expected to increase to roughly $400 billion. Yahoo! has a category dedicated to U.S. military spending that features a number of relevant resources, including this [url="http://www.cdi.org/issues/milspend.html"]table of U.S. military spending[/url] since 1945.
The U.S. military budget shows no signs of decreasing. According to a story in USA Today, Congress is pushing for the first increase in U.S. military troop numbers in 16 years.

I have not translated any other language. I stumble enough on my own language, English, so I appologize for not being able to follow most responses in these forums. My comment is the there are too many "thugs, outlaws, bad guys" in this world. The stage for these sorts is on a local level(street gangs), to national (oppressive corruption), as well as in the international forum (terrorism and war). I do not profess to be able to explain in "black and white" who are the good guys and who are the bad... there is a lot of grey out there. I only wish that history reminds us of the Holocaust of 1940s, Berlin Wall, "Iron Curtain", "ethnic cleansing", political prisons, secret police, brutal dictators, and terrorists of all sorts. The world can be a scary place. I am truly sorry for those good people that are in the battle zones as well as for those victimized from the unseen murdering terrorist. With pride I support the USA military and their mission, by default, world peace keepers. It is refreshing to have reasonable support from other nations interested in peace. Remember, a united stand by all of us now, protects our children's future.
The USA military costs us, it's citizens, dearly. Schools, social programs, as well as it's own infrastructure, suffer from the burden. But it would be far too dangerous of a world for all if the USA was a toothless giant. |

In my opinion the US is the biggest (to use your words) thug, outlaw, bad guy and terrorist. It is the instigator of most atrocities taking place in the world today. The US invades countries under false pretences such as on humanitarian grounds, weapons of mass destruction, to assist freedom fighters (whom later become terrorists according to the US), and as COlDPlaY stated the exploitation of September 11th .
Let's face it the US administration doesn't give a rats a** for any of the people that it claims to be helping the only thing they are interested in is their own political gains.
When the US invades a country they pillage that countries wealth and then leave, in it's wake, a trail of destruction, drugs and prostitution.

The UN only says it to the countries that signed on to the NON Proleferation of Nuclear Weapons Act (I think that is what it is called) hence that is why Isreal is free to do as it pleases.....they didn't sign on to that.

I don't know what you mean by that statement......I never said anything about Russia destroying its weapons.....even with the number of weapons that the russians destroyed they still have enough to destroy the world 1000 times.....you see the Russians had less nuclear missles but alot more Nuclear war heads that went on there missles....I think it was 4 nuclear war heads on each russian missle compared to one nuclear war head on a american missle (if I remember correctly). Kuma i would never refer to you as being naive by no stretch of the imagination. The only problem i have is the definition of the word 'peace'. For centuries the world has been engaged in some type of conflict, turmoil or war. It is the nature of the human beast. So to live in hope of world peace is being extremely hopeful. Humans are not intended to live in peace. Nor are we to live in peace with the universe or acts of god.
I sincerely believe that mass killing and the likes of it are futile behaviour. That said, it is a fact and a way of life as unfortunate as it is.
To be able to settle our differences with verbal debate/banter would be ideal but you are forgetting one important element and that is as prehistoric as the world itself.... EMOTIONS.... they have a way of infuriating people to commit the unthinkable. Not that I am justifying the actions of any invading or attacking country or individual for that matter, but at all times we have to remain 'realistic'.
Unless, we can generically modify the human brain functions and remove the element that allows us to have emotions, then and only then, will we be able to live in your ideal world of peace, admittedly in my opinion, as brain dead androids!
I am not pro-American nor am I anti-American. But we have to remember if it was not for the Americans we may well not have the freedom that we have today. Yes, i admit that they dragged us into both World Wars (even though we were really bound by the Commonwealth) they also offer the security to some extend, for Australia is very prone to attack from our neighbours PNG and I live in the safety knowing that if that ever arose America would be one of the first to offer its services and protection (once again at a cost to us).
There really is no right or wrong opinion nor is there a just or moral way the world should conduct itself. But from where i can see it. We as humans are the earth's and each others worst enemies and i can not see that changing quickly in the near future.

I'm planning on purchasing a Chrysler Pacifica ... largely US components assembled in Canada. It's priced so well now, that it is the best deal in it's class. Other vehicles made over seas were over priced to even compete. By the way the Pacifica is the most comfortable. Quite a bit of the advantage though is the lower US dollar.
By the way, I put in too many winters north of Detroit to remember. Now I'm enjoying the peace in Sunny Florida. We'll put the welcome mat out if you can come sometime, as so many other Canadians do... to visit or retire when the time comes.

To the few of you on site that may be upset, I really hope you're not too offended by my extravagant "capitalist pig" spending. Thumper, you need to bring your elevator down a few floors. Try to understand the difference between rhetorical banter and actual confrontation. You have been responding as if I am a threat to you. I can assure you that I am not. I will continue with my banter as I see fit. None the less, there are serious problems in the world today.
Bear in mind that the root of most of these problems dates back to long before the USA became the world "Super Power" that it is today. It's incredible to study the history of the causes that lead to so many nations to became so torn apart. The USA isn't perfect for sure, but it is the defender of freedom. Every rational person wants peace throughout the world. That includes the people of the USA. Having the influence that we have puts us on the world stage to put out the brush fires of war and genocide.
You should bear in mind that many world problems continue as the result of rampant corruption and massive heartless international corporations and their interests. I think it would be difficult to find anywhere where this is not so. This is not to forget the violent cunning dictators and terrorists.
I trust that you will read this and accept it as my sincere observation. It is a volatile as well as promising time we live in. Give some thought to what I've written as well as some thought to what the world we would live in would be like if there was no USA in the world conflicts over the past 100 years. And think of the world of the future if there was no nation with the influence we have to defend freedom.
I prefer to look forward to when the people of the world live in peace and everyone has the freedom to fully enjoy the time they live in.

He recalls that last May, Bush made a speech in Krakow in which he lamented the Iraq issue had forced Poland to choose between being a good ally of Europe and a good ally of the U.S.
Yet on the ICC issue, Kacinskas says Washington has done exactly the same thing to the six nations set to join NATO. "Our position is that, of course, we are disappointed that we have to choose between Europe and the United States," he says.

The buildings collapsed the way they did because of the high temperatures created by the burning of the fully fueled airplanes. They were actually built to withstand a hit by an airplane.
Fact of the matter is that this was a military operation by the nature of its execution. I don't buy it for a second that a cave dwelling diabetic can pull this off. |
