MACEDONIA TOO WANTS TO INTENSIFY NEGOTIATIONS ABOUT NAME DISPUTE
The Macedonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ilinka Mitreva, met her Greek colleague, Petros Molivijatis, in New York two days ago within the frames of their participation in the UN General Conference. Per "Utrinski vesnik," at this meeting Mitreva welcomed the Greek acceptance of an intensive dialogue about the name-related differences, after the slowdown which occurred because of the
Parliamentary elections in Greece and the Olympic games in Athens.
"For Macedonia, the question of the name is a question of highest national and state interest. We are prepared to intensify the discussions within the UN frames, based on our principal position which is well known and explained in public many times now", Mitreva said after the meeting with Molijavitis.
On the other hand Minister Molijavitis stated that Greece supports FYROM's integration in the EU. Both of the Ministers on the meeting expressed their pleasure from the recent opening of the Liaison Office of Macedonia and Greece in Thessalonica and in Bitola.
As A1 Television reports, Greece has a new proposal as a solution for the Macedonian name dispute, which excludes the double name formula supported by the Macedonian authorities. The double name formula consists of one name meant to be used by Greece for Macedonia, while the Constitutional name is to be used in all other international relations. A1 TV sources claim that the Deputy Minister for
Foreign Affairs of Greece, Valinakis, on a meeting with Mathue Nimic, mediator in the Greek-Macedonian name dispute, came up with a proposal as a solution for the dispute which is not to be revealed for the time being. These sources say that Greece has already suggested that Macedonia should change the name into one
that would be generally used, but Macedonian authorities kept their opinion about the double name.
According to A1 TV, it is being assumed that the name negotiations between Greece and Macedonia will not continue before the Macedonian local elections and the Greek Presidential elections that are being held at the same time.
