Plot Summary
This is a screen adaptation of the novel of the same name. It was nominated for an Oscar. The plot focuses on the events following the tragic conclusion of the Civil War in Greece (1945-1949) when the former Yugoslavia, after falling out with the Comintern, was compelled to cut off all aid to the revolutionaries in Greece, both Macedonian and Greek. The consequence of ending all aid to the revolution in Greece meant unchecked reprisals by Greek Government reactionaries and war crimes against the Macedonian populace and Greek Communists.
The story opens with prisoners being shipped off to a Greek Island where a concentration camp is set up. We witness the hardships that the prisoners endure, particularly those who refuse to sign 'loyalty oaths' to the King of Greece and/or renounce their Macedonian identity.
