Israelis allowed to choose their baby`s gender
JERUSALEM, Israel (UPI) -- Israel`s Health Ministry has received sharp criticism after it ruled parents may choose their baby`s gender in "exceptional" cases.
Commissioner for Future Generations Shlomo Shoham said: "providing the option of choosing the sex of a fetus is sliding down a slippery slope," and "another step on the road to severe moral deterioration," Ha`aretz reported Saturday.
Shoham said Friday he plans to recommend the Knesset pass a law banning gender choosing, except when there is an established mortal danger.
MK Roman Bronfman asked the chairman of the Knesset Welfare and Health Committee to convene a meeting as soon as possible to address the issue. "This is an extremely serious ethical issue and the committee must discuss the limits of human intervention in the rules of nature," Bronfman said.
The Health Ministry decision for the first time allows a baby`s sex to be pre-determined for non-medical reasons. However, the technology is banned in many countries, and is considered immoral in others, Shoham said.
