Btw, pazete se ko letate, torba u race non-stop [:(!] Face that stopped a nation By Stephen Gibbs May 28, 2005 Page Tools Natalie Wolfe and Guy Pilgrim console each other at the Tungun Surf Club on the Gold Coast, where supporters had gathered. Photo: Steve Holland In underground food halls, city workers rushed down their lunch and watched her on the big screens; in pubs and clubs in the suburbs, they turned their backs on poker machines and looked up from their beers. Even in the last hours before Schapelle Corby's fate was sealed in a Balinese court room, Australians seemed to confirm one thing yesterday: this really was just like the Melbourne Cup. Whether believing her guilty or innocent, anticipating her imminent freedom or expecting a lifetime in jail, her countrymen and women were united in wanting to watch. It was the drug case that stopped a nation. A few minutes glued to a television to see out a commitment that had roped them in quickly then dragged on for eight months. Even the Prime Minister, John Howard, declared yesterday that the entire nation "feels for this girl", although he implored Australians to trust the Indonesian justice system. In front of a 50-inch plasma TV screen, on the seventh floor of the Market Street David Jones store, 30-year-old city worker Nina heard the verdict at 1.34pm - and silently started to weep. AdvertisementAdvertisement About 20 others were standing beside her, and a dozen more watching on 15 smaller screens, but Nina was so embarrassed to be spotted crying she did not want to give her full name. "I just feel very sad. I really do. That's all." This scene - men and women of all ages and backgrounds riveted to televisions - was repeated in shops, hotels, airports, offices, homes across the land. These sentiments will be heard further today. John Howard had foreseen this phenomenon and predicted its powerful impact when he called on the nation to prepare for and accept whatever verdict was handed down. Nina, her eyes red and wet, was nonetheless smiling as she tried to explain why she had been shedding tears for a total stranger in a busy department store. "Anybody could be in that position," she said. "Everyone says she's guilty, but if it was their own daughter ..." Not everyone did think Corby was guilty but few saw a verdict going the other way, not even Nina. "I didn't think she had much of a chance." Since Corby's arrest at Denpasar Airport in October this has been a story reinvented with whatever new television images were available each night, and sustained by politicians, police, commentators and radio listeners all the next day. Throughout most of it Corby's voice has been the only notable one missing. From Bali have come constantly reworked protestations of Corby's innocence, laid over silent scenes of her in jail. Corby's voice has come through in letters, attempts at prison poetry and snippets of conversations repeated by others. At home, anyone who had something to say and many who did not were heard. The Federal Police Commissioner, Mick Keelty, provided regular commentary on the lack of substance in her defence. The Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, praised our relationship with Indonesia. The Prime Minister empathised with citizens who worried a fellow Australian was an innocent victim of circumstance, and told of his personal interest in the case. Qantas and its employees tried to distance themselves from allegations that baggage handlers planted the drugs found in Corby's bodyboard bag. If anyone doubted such tampering possible, that doubt was gone when one was caught on Sydney Airport's tarmac wearing a camel suit he had taken from a passenger's bag. And for Australians like Nina, at DJs, the whole saga was once again reduced to where it began, the tormented face of a young woman in a foreign jail, terrified and abandoned, whose screams cannot be heard. "Even if she is guilty, I don't think she deserves that.

Sega ona e vo Indonesia vo nekoj vo zatvorite, ama ova gubrevo ovdeka toa e krivo, da bese amerikanka ona dosega Bush ke dojdese ke ja zemese so Avion i ke ja vratese nazad.
